From Hickory Daily Record: A NASCAR champion, an All-American swimmer, a three-sport prep star, a
longtime youth coach and an icon in the world of slow-pitch softball
are headed into the Catawba County Sports Hall of Fame. The
Hickory Metro Sports Commission announced its class of 2011 on
Wednesday, and the five selections will be inducted May 9 at Catawba
Valley Community College.
The 10th Hall of Fame class, bringing its membership to 47, is:
Dale Jarrett, 54, who began racing at 20 at Hickory Motor Speedway.
He finished his NASCAR career with 32 wins, 163 top-five finishes, 260
top-10 finishes and three Daytona 500 victories (1993, 1996 and 2000).
Jarrett has retired from racing and is a NASCAR analyst for ESPN and ABC Sports.
Jarrett's father, Ned, also a NASCAR champion, was in the first class (2001) of the Hall of Fame.
"It's an extreme honor to have this opportunity to follow my father
into this Hall of Fame," Jarrett said at Wednesday's press conference.
"It means a lot to me. And to hear about all the accomplishments, it's
just amazing when you realize the athletes and the people that have made
a difference right here around us."
